I was blown away by many things - the nearly equal representation of genders, the quality of thought presented by speakers, and the desire of attendees from many disciplines to experience the day together and improve, question, and share their practice. In an effort to synthesize my notes and reflect further I'm going to share my key takeaways from some of the speakers. While I know these bullets could never replace the richness of experiencing this live with carefully curated examples to enrich the takeaways, I hope that you find your own “aha” moments and questions arise.

They came from many different industries including government, journalism, academia, and design. By experience every session together, each opportunity for one-on-one conversation were led to really though-provoking reflection and ideas around the several questions that arose throughout the day. While many examples were presented that expressed the speakers points, I found I left the conference with more questions than answers and I think that’s okay. The presentations already sparked new ideas for me and I gathered a lot of helpful thoughts from others too.

After just returning from Tableau's annual conference and being eager to try their new feature, TabPy, this seemed like the perfect opportunity to test it out. In this blog post, I'm going to offer a step-by-step guide on how I did this. If you haven't used Python before, have no fear - this is definitely achievable for novices - read on!
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
For some context before I begin, I have limited experience with Python. I recently completed a challenging but great course through edX that I'd highly recommend if you are looking for foundational knowledge - Introduction to Computer Science and Programming Using Python. The syllabus included advanced Python including Classes and thinking about algorithmic complexity. However, to run the analysis I did, it would be helpful to look up and understand at a high level:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">basic for loops

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">lists

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">dictionaries

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">importing libraries

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">The libraries I used for this, should you want to look up additional documentation, are:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">pandas

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">nltk

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">time (this one isn't really necessary - I just used it to test computation time differences between TabPy and local processing.)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I have a Mac <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">so if you're trying to reproduce with a PC, you'll find install instructions here as well.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Part 1 - Setting Up Your Environment

Make sure you are using Tableau v10.1

Open TDE<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"> with Top 100 Songs data

Install TabPy

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Read through the install directions. Here's my simplified version for those not comfortable with GitHub or command line:

Click the green "Clone or Download" button.

Select Download

Unzip the file and save locally (I moved mine to my desktop)

Open your Terminal and navigate to your TabPy folder. Run these commands:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you see this after your install finished, you're all set!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Part 2 - Connecting to TabPy in Tableau

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now it's time to setup your TabPy in Tableau. In Tableau 10.1 go to:

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Part 3 - Creating your TabPy Calculation

I simply repurposed one of the calcs they demoed during the TabPy session at #data16 - catch the replay here.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Now you can use this calculated field in views with [Word] to process the sentiment score! The downside is that since this is a table calculation and also uses ATTR, you cannot use this within a level of detail calculation (LOD). So unfortunately, you cannot sum of the sentiment on the level of detail of song using this example and data structure. With some data manipulation it is possible but I won't be diving into that.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">TabPy vs. Pre-Processing Data for Tableau

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">Unfortunately, you cannot publish vizzes using TabPy to Tableau Public. If you want to download the .twbx version I made using TabPy, you can do so here.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">However, you could run this analysis outside of Tableau and simply import the output and create your viz that way. I did this which also gave me more flexibility with LODs since I no longer was using TabPy.

These past 8 months have been extremely rewarding for me. Not only have I been sharpening my organizing and community building skills but I've built an amazing network of friendship and support.
<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">One thing that continually will come up in our conversations is the idea of "non-traditional" vs. "traditional" educational backgrounds. "Traditional" referring to professionals who have a STEM (i.e. Computer Science, Statistics, Math, etc.) background versus those of us who have a degree in a liberal arts field (i.e. Communications, Business, PoliSci, etc.). It's really interesting to see how this manifests in the types of struggles they face. Speaking personally, I studied Political Science and had a few non-data jobs before entering this space. I've always felt a bit behind from peers who have STEM backgrounds which causes me stress and a lot of after hours self-learning activities to "keep up". I've connected with many others who feel similarly. However, we have had amazing guests and attendees at our events with masters or doctorates in Statistics and other STEM fields. They are also very driven and do take self-improvement just as seriously.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif; font-size: 12.8px;">It's very difficult to find data on this divide* - especially specific to people who work in the data industry. I've looked at statistics from the Department of Education and know that <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">i<span style="background-color: white; font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;"><span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">n <span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">the mid-1980s, 37% of computer science majors were women whereas in 2013-14 only 18%. But the reality is that there are many people in our space who don't have a Computer Science degree, or have a different STEM degree, and they're very successful in their craft.
<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">

In an effort to learn more about data industry professionals and their backgrounds, I've created a short 8 question survey that I would appreciate if you take and share on your social networks and with your colleagues. I am hoping to get a good sample size and plan to use some of this information in a conference presentation.

Over the last year I have noticed that as my social engagement increased I started to receive many messages to the likes of the following:

"I came across your Tableau profile/blog/Twitter and as a new user I would love to know your journey/resources you used to learn the tool."

"How did you enter the data field with a background in political science?"

"I came across your profile and was very impressed with your achievements and career path as you have grown into the Business Intelligence field. What advice would you have to a new comer?"

"As someone who came from a non-technical background and quickly grown into the BI field successfully, I am wondering if you would share your experiences and tips."

For a while I felt a bit out of place to receive the compliments and struggled to realize I had a point of view that could be valuable to others in their own career progression. With the support of my peers and the amazing women I get to engage with in the Tableau/data community I have gained a new confidence and comfort in sharing my techniques. I've always been a compassionate person and I truly love helping others. Instead of keeping all the tips and tricks that have helped me grow hidden in private messages, I thought I would share with you publicly!

My Recommendations

1. Always surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. I have always been intimidated by folks who I aspire to be like but have found that when I overcome that shyness and seek out their help they usually like to share it. I have two categories of these people. First, the peers I interact with regularly so perhaps people at work who are senior to me. With these folks, I seek mentors and try to meet on a cadence. I also use these people for advice on an as needed basis. Second, what I call "stretch connections" - people who are many levels senior to me, experts in industry, etc. I connect with the people via LinkedIn and Twitter. I usually introduce myself, compliment the aspects of their work I admire and try to see if we can chat over the phone or meet over coffee if we're located in the same place. I use these opportunities to discover how they've found success, their thoughts on the field, etc. Through this, I've met Founders, Data Scientists in the U.S. and met with people at companies I dream to work at.

2. Take on opportunities you're afraid of. I always find it easy to doubt my capabilities but my last two jobs I had fears about the level or work and expectations of my performance. However, I've always felt when under pressure and forced do step outside my comfort zone that it accelerates my learning. I'm able to quickly understand new technologies and apply them quickly. I am able to learn more in a few months through hands-on experience versus years of higher education.

3. Have a growth mindset. Good book on the subject:http://www.amazon.com/Mindset-The-New-Psychology-Success/dp/0345472322 Basically, believe that your knowledge isn't fixed and that you always have the ability to learn new things. Some things may not come as quick as others but with handwork and persistence you can succeed in your endeavors. With that, always being cognizant that your current understanding is limited and that there is always more to learn. Be humble enough to recognize this and always strive to be better.

4. Have a point of view. Recently I've been becoming more involved in the public space - tweeting and sharing my work on Tableau public. As I've increased my social presence, I've increased my clout and have experienced more people viewing my LinkedIn page, reaching out to me for opportunities, citing my work in their articles, etc. Gaining credibility in the field really helps push you to develop your skills further and often widens your circle.

I have been enjoying seeing this series progress the last few weeks. People have produced such interesting variations of the same data set (see the variety, here!). I particularly like this project for a few reasons:

It removes all the pre-viz steps such as data collection, cleaning, etc. and allows you to focus right in on best practices and design.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">If you stick with suggested 1 hour time block, it makes participation less daunting.

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">It allows you to see what others in the community came up with for the same dataset. I have been finding myself having a-ha moments and really drawing inspiration...I might have an update to this with a makeover of my own incorporating all my favorite parts of others :)

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">By engaging with the community, it will encourage you to continue to participate and expand your skillset.

So why not give next week's #MakeoverMonday a go? NPR did a great write up on traditional choropleth maps, cartograms and tile maps.

Some awesome Tableau folks have also done great tutorials and published these non-traditional map types publically including Brittany Fong, Matt Chambers and Kris Ericson. There are definitely instances where this type of map enhances the data view or enables better flow and certainly some where it won't be suitable (for example, showing data at the county level among others - example).

I came into this field from a non-traditional background like many others. There's definitely an emergence of new or rebranded data science degree and certificate programs. I was excited when I came across Dan Murray's article on the Interworks Blog that used data and an awesome tableau visualization to show programs throughout the U.S. Since I came across this at the same time that I was experimenting with tile maps I thought it was a great candidate for a little makeover!

One of the benefits that I find particularly useful in the right scenarios is that by normalizing the size of the of states, you set yourself up for success in then using that map view to drive action filters. So, for example, if the map is the driver of more granular analysis it's so much easier to show New England, D.C., Hawaii and Alaska and enhances the user experience by making it easier for them to select the state. I love that you can still color them based on another level of dimensionality and add labels.

For this viz, I felt that the geographic borders of the state or any sub-level information weren't necessary for visualizing which states have schools that offer degrees in this subject area. The color really allows you to quickly zone in on higher saturations. I think it's much easier to to filter with this view as well. Also, by including Hawaii and Alaska it lets the user know with certainty that those states don't have schools that offer the program area versus being left to assume or guess. I think for American's using this visualization comes with less risk as the orientation of the states in relation to one another is more known. Interestingly enough, I demoed this map style to an internal functional group and my coworker from China said she felt like the map was easier for her to understand than the choropleth. I could see, however, how it might pose challenges to others.

Have you used these map styles and, if so, what was the use case? I'd love to see other's out there on Tableau public of hear of business applications.
I'm not packed, I haven't picked all the sessions I want to attend yet and I realize my Tableau vizzing has been...well...not existent the last couple of months. The dashboards I made with my team were in production and I started on a new project at work focused on data migration and architecture, less so on visualization (for now). I decided I needed to grease the wheels and play to get back into Tableau mode. To be honest, I didn't have a particular question in mind or a story I wanted to tell. I just wanted a data set that required minimal prep work so that I could get to vizzing. I ended up coming across Jewel Loree's data feed on "Inside Airbnb". The source of the data, Inside Airbnb, hosted a collection of Airbnb data for cities around the world. The best part for me was that the data had already been analyzed, cleansed and aggregated where appropriate. Perfect! As a new resident of the San Francisco Bay Area and customer of Airbnb I immediately grabbed that data set and naively went about creating my dashboard without any attention to the story that was brewing in the media, in courtrooms and likely cities near you...

But first, the viz!

Sorry for the cut off - still figuring this out! I'll eventually figure out how to widen my panel. If anyone has other recommendations, let me know!

Design

- I created a custom color palette by copying an image of their logo from a google search into MS Paint and then used the dropper to get the RGB values. I know, high tech. Next, I used the Palleton color scheme maker by inputting the color values into their web app. I then followed these instructions to import my custom palette into Tableau.

- I also saved a .PNG version of the logo which you see incorporated in the far right with the filter buttons. To do this, I imported a custom shape (the logo). Here's some clear instructions.

- My favorite visualization on this first dashboard is the box and whisker plot (here's how). It tells you a lot of information and takes up minimal real estate. See Tufte's Data-Ink ratio. You can see the distribution in rental costs across the many neighborhoods of San Francisco. The line in the middle shows the median price ($205.71). The lighter shaded top part of the box is called the upper quartile ($251.04). The darker box on the bottom is the lower quartile ($165.98). The data points extend to the top and bottom whiskers. These data points represent the lowest and highest observations.
Tip: you can right click the axis and customize your box and whiskers (mine here show the defaults).

Source

In this data set, you can see Pacific Heights average rental cost is $331.68, much higher than the median. The lowest average rental prices are observed in Visitacion Valley at $108.11. If you highlight this neighborhood on the map you'll notice it's on the far south eastern side of San Francisco further from the tourist spots. Interestingly enough, this neighborhood has the 2nd highest number of listings. What about Pacific Heights? Why does the rental cost much higher there? According to the the internet/Wikipedia:

It is located in one of the most scenic and park-like settings in Northern California, offering panoramic views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the San Francisco Bay, the Palace of Fine Arts, Alcatraz and the Presidio.
Its location provides a temperate micro-climate that is clearer, but
not always warmer, than many other areas in San Francisco.

Ah, okay. Makes sense.

- This dashboard also features a dual axis where I am showing the # of listings and the acceptance rate per neighborhood. Here's Tableau's guide to how to make a dual axis. The version in the screenshots is ancient at this point but the steps remain true. I like to sort my bar charts in descending order, most importantly in this case because my chart is scrolling down so without a sort you can't see the top data points clearly. I also think it makes more logical sense when I'm trying to pinpoint the highest or lowest values of a dimension. I also like to sort this in descending by number of listings. Isn't Tableau wonderful? Many times when I use dual axis I synchronize the axis. But, since the formats were different I kept the default and made sure to add a label. For the number of listings I used a Gantt Bar to show the number of listens relative to the acceptance rate.

- As far as the map, nothing fancy there. The data set already contained the latitudinal and longitudinal values for the the neighborhoods. I made my marks circles, colored by neighborhood, sized by the size of the rental (in square feet), set the color transparency to 83% and threw a bunch of dimensions on the tool tip card. I made sure to edit the tool tips to continue the color scheme and branding. I always feel this makes the overall visualization look very polished too!

- To make the logo button filters on the right I simply put my neighborhood dimension on the row shelf, changed the marks to shapes and updated the default shape to the image I imported earlier. Then, through the use of dashboards actions I enabled the worksheets within the viz to speak to each other.

- The global filters at the top are pretty standard. Something I like to always do it customize them to include the "Apply Button".

This is the second dashboard of what I published and I was so shocked to see that the first dashboard had over 6600 views yet the second one only...30. Wow, I am a bit bummed folks missed this one because it starts to tell the real story of this data! This could be a lesson to me that I should use Tableau's story points next time! Anyways, after I made the first dashboard I looked back on the site Jewel linked to where I actually downloaded the data. I realized in my haste to get the data I didn't pause to actually read the intent of Inside Airbnb. They provide the data so that, "you can see how Airbnb is being used to compete with the residential housing market." Hmmm, interesting. I decided to take a look for myself and that was the driver of this view.

Design

First, the map. This one I love. I wanted to show the growth of Airbnb in San Francisco over time. On my desktop version it loops through automatically but I noticed when I published you have to manually click the carrot to move through each year. :( Anyone know why that is or how I can fix that? Anyhow, pages create a separate chart for each value in the field and enables you to cycle through them almost like a slideshow. It's really easy to do and works really well with use cases such as this one. So my map viz just contains the longitude and latitude on the columns and rows shelf respectively. I used the circle mark and then dropped the room type to color. Then I dragged my Year pill to the Pages shelf and voila. You'll see the page shelf activate and just like other Tableau menus, you can right click and customize. I chose to loop the playback but unfortunately that didn't show on the published version. It's amazing to see how saturated the city is now and to see it grow so quickly over the last 7 years. The purpose of coloring on the room type this time versus the neighborhood is to show that most of the listings are for the entire home.

Next, let's look at this more clearly with the bottom line chart. You can see shared rooms weren't even an option until 2011. The highest growth was for the entire home/apt. I thought it was interesting that it was climbing very quickly but then something happened in 2014 and the growth of those listings slowed. Hmm, why? Well it turns out that's the year the city legalized and started regulating these types of short-term rentals, see here. So what does that mean? Well, it means new town ordered limits to hosts, fees, registering your rental with the City Planning Department, hotel taxes, liability insurance, rent control laws and penalties for not abiding by these laws. Sounds like a lot of hassle and risk, right? You can still see growth from 2014-2015 but just not as sharply. I would probably add a comment about this around that data point if I were doing it again.

The table on the right (sorry you'll have to open the viz in a new tab!). Alright, I know Tableau isn't meant for tabular displays of data but it does have the word Table in it's name, right? I normally do not use crosstabs. But in my haste and to conserve space I did. I wanted to show the number of listings by host and how many days per year they are available. This is important to the debate. The anti-Airbnbers argue that wealthy real estate mogels profit from this service and that it exacerbates the affordable housing crisis. You should watch some of their campaign videos a bit over the top IMHO. Anyways, this data could support this claim. I don't know anyone who has that many properties. Also notice that most of them are available all year or close to 365 days out of the year.

The parameter over the table controls the number of rows you see in the table and is tied to the number of listings the host has. I made this because there were over 4000 hosts and the point was in really looking at the top hosts by number of listings. In hindsight, I would either remove this and only show the top 25 or limit the sliding scale more. The key to making the parameter work for me was creating a calculated field I called Filter Top N: [Rank]<=[Select Top 'N' Value] I then dragged that to the filter shelf and selected "True" so the visualization would only show data points that were in the Top N selected value.

The last stylist thing I did was the logo border. I wanted to add some pizzazz but it doesn't do anything for the data so best practice wise, a no no. You can tell I put more time in the design of the first dashboard and ran out of time with this one but I believe this one starts to bring more visibility to the true story behind the data.

This last tab is meant to act as more of a bibliography if you will. I always feel it important to credit sources of information. I also wanted to end by beginning to share two sides of the story. This dashboard has had less then 10 views but I strongly urge you to look at the details here! I posted some info on a study Airbnb commissioned and another visual showing Airbnb listings compared to hotel listings.

I could continue on but if anyone is still reading this post I am sure I've really pushed the limits of your attention span. In my next post I will discuss the politics and data behind the shared economy debate and Airbnb!

You were inspired by others work, incredulous at the things you saw Tableau could do, excited for all the new feature announcements, giddy over the amazing speakers and feverishly taking notes as to not forget a thing. Your feet probably also ache, you had a great nights sleep in your own bed and you're ready for a Netflix weekend with the SO and/or kiddos. But what about now? What's next? Here's 10 things you can do now to continue the spirit of the conference and continue to grow in your practice:

Connect with your colleges this week at work to reflect and share your conference experiences and to strategize how to harness the momentum, new connections and gained knowledge in your everyday practice.

Now is the perfect time to catch up on the conference Twitter hashtag #data15 among others (like #datapluswomen!). See the conference through others eyes, find out about the moments you missed and discover new folks to follow! Also, did you know that each conference session had hashtag? While you're at it, use the conference app to lookup the sessions you attended or the ones you wanted to attend!

Download Vizable, the free app that turns your data into beautiful, interactive graphs. It was revealed and went live during Day 1 of the conference and it has already been a big hit! Requires iOS 8.0 or later. Compatible with iPad.

Daniel Pink talked about the power of regularly devoting time to be creative outside of your daily responsibilities. He discussed a few examples of companies that do this and call it such names as Genius Hour, Friday Evening Experiments or Ship it Days. Have a conversation with your manager about testing this out on your team or consider incorporating it into your life outside of work even if just for 1 hour per week.

Download Tableau Public and start experimenting publically with data!

Speaking of #Data16, did you know you can already register and save $500!? Next years conference will be in Austin, TX. Consider writing yourself a memo for things you wish you did/brought/etc. this year. For me, that will include comfortable shoes, bandaids/blister block and business cards!

Check your inbox for an e-mail from Tableau with all the Tableau Conference materials! Take a stab at the hands-on workshop materials, browse attachments from sessions you were unable to attend and drink from the fire hose!
